Fathima P.
Torres
Founder & President
Fathima P. Torres was born
in New York City from Dominican parents. At a young age, she left the United
States to live with her family in Dominican Republic. While there, she
dedicated her time to her studies and to different youth programs.
In 1985, Fathima Torres returned to
United States and established herself in the Hamilton Heights area of
Community District 9 in Manhattan, New
York City, where her remaining family members have lived since late 50s.
Coming from a family where social
and political awareness was a concern to all, Fathima’s desire to work in
favor of her community has been a natural call. She has been involved in
various initiatives and organizations such as Dominican Women Caucus where
she was the Director of Public Relations for several years; the
National Dominican Women's Caucus;
Dominican
American National Roundtable where she is the Chair of the Finance
Committee; The Oliver Program where Fathima
was the President of the Parent Council. In addition to this, Fathima
is a member to the Community Advisory Committee to Columbia University and a
member to the Community Advisory Committee to City College. She has
also received several national and international awards.
Inspired by the residents of her
community, who are hunger for support and community programs, in 2003 Fathima
founded DONAR, Inc. to address the lack of services that the Latino
community in Community District 9 in Manhattan were receiving and to also address similar
issues in Council District 7 in Manhattan and countries like Dominican Republic.
Fathima is a member of
Community Board 9 in Manhattan. Assigned to the Youth, Libraries and Education Committee
and the Budget Committee.
Fathima has a Business
Administration degree and lives with her children in Hamilton Heights.
